CNC turning and milling are important services for our clients, but if they are new to machining they may feel overwhelmed by all the new terminology. Though it sounds complicated, most of the terms are actually fairly simple once you understand the machining process

D&E Machine will go over basic CNC terminology and phrases.

What is CNC turning?

With CNC turning, the material being cut is spun rapidly while the cutting tools remain stationary around the outside. This works best for creating cylindrical parts and components and is an efficient way to produce a large number of small pieces.

What is CNC milling?

In CNC milling, the material being cut is stationary, while the cutting tools move around the outside of the material. This works best when starting with square or rectangular pieces. CNC milling can be done vertically or horizontally, and D&E Machine does both.

What does the “CNC” stand for?

CNC stands for “computer numerical control.” In CNC turning and milling, the machines are controlled by computer programs that tell them how to cut and shape the material. CNC machining of parts and components can be done quickly and the results are incredibly precise.

What is a CNC lathe?

A CNC lathe is a computer-controlled machine that performs CNC turning services. Also known as a CNC turning machine, it holds the material to be cut and quickly spins it, while the tools on the outside remain stationary. The computer controls allow for very precise cuts and shaping.

The part of the CNC lathe that holds the material is called the “chuck.”
